The research phase focused on understanding how scientific institutions communicate complex environmental data to general audiences. Many systems prioritize accuracy but fail to create emotional engagement or accessibility. References included marine research institutes, climate visualization tools, and interactive science publications. The goal was to bridge the gap between data and understanding. This phase defined a need for clarity without reduction, ensuring complexity remains intact but readable.
The identity system was designed around clarity, rhythm, and informational structure. Typography became the primary tool for organizing knowledge. Color and layout were derived from oceanic gradients and navigational charts, creating a subtle connection to maritime environments. The result is a system that feels informative, calm, and structured.
The platform was designed as an exploratory journey through layered information. Users move through topics such as climate change, marine life, and coastal systems at their own pace. Motion and transitions were used to guide attention between data sets and narratives without overwhelming the user. The experience balances education with engagement, making complex topics more approachable.
Scientific data was translated into visual systems that emphasize comprehension over decoration. Charts, diagrams, and interactive elements were designed for clarity. Each visualization adapts across devices while maintaining structural consistency. This ensures that data remains accessible in both detailed and simplified views.
Coast Observatory becomes an educational platform that transforms scientific communication into an accessible digital experience. The final system strengthens understanding while preserving the depth and integrity of the original research.
